A medical assistant typically works in a physician's office, performing many clinical and administrative duties. The actual tasks of a medical assistant will very from employer to employer and depend on the size and location of the office in which they work. In smaller offices, medical assistants often perform duties ranging from administrative tasks (e.g. updating patient's medical records, filling out insurance forms, arranging hospital admissions, and in some cases scheduling appointments or answering phones) to reporting directly to another health practitioner. In larger offices, medical assistants typically specialize in one area and are under the supervision of department supervisors.
Clinical medical assistants and those working in larger offices may take patients’ medical histories, record vital signs, prepare patients for tests and assist physicians during examinations. They may also collect laboratory specimens and perform basic laboratory exams on patients. Clinical medical assistants often provide patients with information about their medications, prepare and/or administer medications, take electrocardiograms, change dressings, and remove sutures. They may also arrange and sterilize examining room equipment and maintain and purchase needed medical supplies.
Those looking to begin a career as a medical assistant will need to complete a one to two year program for medical assistants. While there are a variety of medical assistant schools, students may want to consider enrolling in an online medical assistant program. Online learning is more convenient and much less expensive than traditional brick and mortar universities and schools. Studying to become a medical assistant online provides the student with the flexibility to work full time if needed, while still obtaining the educational requirements for medical assistant certification.
Medical assistant programs typically last one year, which results in a certificate or diploma, or two years, which results in an Associate’s degree. Courses typically include classes in anatomy, physiology and medical terminology as well as many other administrative type classes. These courses are designed to not only provide the necessary skills and knowledge needed to work as a successful medical assistant, but also to prepare the student for the certification exam. While not all employers require certification, many students choose to obtain their certification credentials in order to obtain better job placement and advancement opportunities.
Programs to become a medical assistant are available in both online and offline versions. The school that a student chooses is typically based on location, convenience and cost. Online medical assistant programs typically have an advantage over traditional education options in meeting these criteria. For instance, the cost of online learning is typically lower than the cost of most junior/community colleges and trade schools. Students who have the ability to discipline themselves during their studies make excellent candidates for online classes.
Whether online or off, students preparing for a career as a medical assistant should possess the ability to communicate with people very well. They should have a strong high school background in math and science, as these are important subjects in the medical assistant curriculum. Other preferred skills include the ability to respond quickly to emergency situations and the ability to keep a cool head under pressure. While the courses for medical assistants will teach students the information required to do the job, personal skills are also very important in this profession.
