Medical Assistant Requirements
The demand for medical and health professionals has increased over the past few years, and is expected to continue to grow in the future. For medical assistants in particular, the demand for workers is expected to grow up to 35% over the next ten years. Individuals who are considering a career as a medical assistant should find many job prospects available during this time period, as they will be filling vacant roles left by retiring professionals as well as new positions.
In order to qualify for a medical assistant position an individual must obtain the correct education, training, and certification. Typically, this consists of a one to two year program that can be taken at a variety of educational institutions. Often the completion of these programs results in a certificate or a diploma like an Associate's degree. During their education, students are expected to take courses such as anatomy, medical terminology, physiology, typing, record keeping, and insurance processing, among others.
While every employer may not require formal training for medical assistants, most prefer it to "on-the-job" training. Therefore, individuals who complete a medical assistant program are likely to have an advantage when searching for employment. In addition, most employers also opt for professionals who have completed the certification requirements and exam to become certified medical assistants, as it shows them that the candidate already had the knowledge and skills required for the key demands of the job. There are a number of associations that offer certification and the actual process of becoming certified varies from location to location. Students studying to become medical assistants can also obtain certifications in specialty areas such as ophthalmology, optometry, podiatry, etc.
Many medical assistant schools offer classes for online study in addition to (or in place of) more traditional class attendance. Studying to become a medical assistant online certainly has its benefits, such as convenience, lower cost, and the flexibility to study when and where the student chooses. The growing need for medical assistants makes it likely that even more trade schools and universities will offer the required course work. However, by studying online rather than attending a "brick and mortar" university, students have the advantage of never being too late to sign up for a class. Since the classroom is virtual, there is plenty of space for interested students to enroll.
Most courses for this field, whether online or in a traditional college or trade school, are typically the same. Candidates should possess the ability for sound reasoning as well as good communication skills. Medical assistants deal with the public, so they should also possess a pleasant “bedside” manner and have the ability to speak to patients and their families in a soothing yet instructional tone.
This quickly growing field will likely see even more growth in the future. As the demand for medical attention grows so will the demand for medical assistants. It is safe to assume that medical assistants will be in high demand for many years to come.
